Highways England has responded to the COVID-19 crisis by opening new lanes on the busy M62 motorway.
A fourth lane is now open in both directions between Warrington and Manchester, from junction 10 to junction 12.
The extra lane is intended to make travel easier for key workers and people making essential journeys during the Coronavirus pandemic.
A 50mph speed limit will be in place on the road for safety reasons as Highways England finishes installing electronic signs along the stretch.
Variable speed limits of up to 70mph will be introduced on the motorway later in the year, once new road signs have been fully tested, with the aim of minimising stop-start conditions.
CCTV cameras will also be in operation along the motorway, with control room operators on hand to reduce speed limits and display warning messages in the event of an incident.
The introduction of new lanes will make travel easier for all road users, however Highways England has reminded motorists that government guidance advises people to only use their cars for essential journeys.
That means cars should only be used if the driver is leaving home to buy food, for medical reasons, or to travel to and from work if they cannot work from home.
Motorists are also advised to only travel alone or with members of their household.
Those who are displaying symptoms of Coronavirus or who are in self-isolation should remain in their homes for the full 14-day incubation period.
