The ULEZ expands today – here’s how to check if your vehicle is compliant

The Ultra Low Emissions Zone (ULEZ) will expand today (29 August) to cover all London boroughs. So, if you haven’t already, you should probably check if your vehicle is compliant with emissions standards. 

How can I check if my vehicle is ULEZ compliant? 

If you don’t know offhand if your vehicle is compliant, there are plenty of ways to check.  

You can use the TfL checker, which asks you to enter your number plate before telling you whether your vehicle complies with the ULEZ standards. 

There’s also a website in partnership with the DVLA, that lets you check if your vehicle is compliant. Visit the ULEZ Check website. 

What are the standards? 

Petrol cars, as well as vans, minibuses and other petrol vehicles have to meet Euro 4 emission standards, which were introduced in 2006. That means most petrol vehicles registered in or after 2006 will be able to enter the ULEZ for free. 

Diesel vehicles will have to meet the much stricter Euro 6 standards, which were introduced in 2015. Only diesel vehicles registered in 2015 or later will be compliant with ULEZ standards. 

Motorcycles are slightly different, having to comply with Euro 3 emissions standards, which were introduced in 2007.  

All vehicles made before 1 January 1973 are exempt from the ULEZ charge. 

All fully electric vehicles are also exempt from the ULEZ charge; however hybrids must follow the same rules set for standard petrol and diesel vehicles. 

What happens if my vehicle isn’t compliant? 

If your vehicle doesn’t comply with ULEZ standards, you’ll have to pay a £12.50 daily charge if you decide to drive within the newly expanded ULEZ.  

You can also apply for the ULEZ scrappage scheme, which gives grants so drivers can exchange their non-compliant vehicles for a greener alternative. 

If your vehicle is not compliant or you forget, or fail, to pay the daily charge, you could face a fine of up to £180. However, it is possible to set up Auto Payments if you know you’ll be travelling in and around the ULEZ on a regular basis.
