2. Peugeot 308
Getting 70.6mpg officially and 47mpg real-world fuel consumption, this hatchback is a mid-size vehicle that’s great on the pocket.
3. Dacia Sandero
The petrol version of the Sandero is one of the cheapest cars on the road, and you can buy a brand new one for as little as £6,000. Factor in the low fuel consumption and great value insurance, and you’re on to a winner.
4. Suzuki Celero
According to Auto Express, the Celero is the cheapest city car to own in Britain. The motoring specialist says this small car lacks flair, focusing “unashamedly on practicality and cost”.
5. Dacia Logan MCV 1.2 Access

6. Citroën C1
WhatCar.co.uk says the C1 is made in the same factory as Toyota Aygo; the two cars are practically identical with many of the same strengths and weaknesses. However, the Citroën is slightly cheaper to buy. Auto Express gave the car an astonishing 88.58% mark on running costs and says its fuel economy is “from another planet”.
7. Kia Picanto
WhatCar.com says the Picanto gets a more than respectable 47 miles to the gallon, and with a low purchase price and slow depreciation, it makes a great cost-focused purchase.
8. Peugeot 108
Top Gear says the 108 “costs peanuts to run”, thanks to excellent fuel consumption and a list price starting at just £8,945.
9. Toyota Aygo
Having all the benefits of the C1, the Aygo just has a slightly higher list price.
10. Vauxhall Viva
Undercutting most of its rivals on the forecourt, the purchase price of a Viva is around £10,050. With the 1Litre’s efficient engine getting 61.4mpg, it’s not too shabby on running costs either.
